Welcome to The Non-Subscriber
A space for the spiritually curious, the faithfully unorthodox, and those who have found themselves on the margins of Christendom
The Non-Subscriber is a ministry dedicated to those who believe in love more than labels, compassion more than conformity, and the teachings of Jesus more than the doctrines about Jesus.
Why The Non-Subscriber?
The name is meant to be more than a tongue-in-cheek nod to the newsletter format.
It reflects a way of approaching the Christian faith that does not require subscribing to a fixed creed, statement, affirmation, or list of theological propositions. It harkens to a rich tradition that welcomes exploration, doubt, and disagreement. The phrase “non-subscribing” has long been used by Unitarian and non-creedal Christian groups, like the Non-Subscribing Presbyterian Church of Ireland (NSPCI). The Non-Subscriber draws influence from the American Unitarian Christian tradition, as well as current non-subscribing groups like the NSPCI-affiliated Dublin Unitarian Church, which has a very generous and open-hearted approach to faith. As they put it:
Unitarians have no dogma or set creed. Most Unitarians probably… believe that Jesus was an extraordinary human, from whom we can take considerable inspiration. We feel that Unitarians can be called Christians in the sense that a person is a Christian who tries to live in accord with the teachings of Jesus rather than struggling to accept the teachings about him.”
That free spirit resonates here.
What to Expect
This space will share:
Short reflections on faith, scripture, and spiritual freedom'
Devotional meditations rooted in love and mystery
Explorations of phrases like “Christianity without Creed” and “Gospel without Gatekeeping”
Occasional essays on theology, Jesus, and the wisdom coming to us from other traditions
A non-dogmatic approach that affirms the dignity and agency of seekers, skeptics, and believers alike
This is not a place for absolute answers, but for inquiry and consideration. I share these ideas as a minister in the Unitarian Christian tradition; as such, the guiding conviction behind this space is simple: God is love. Wherever love is, there also is something holy and worth meditating on.
You Are Welcome Here
There is no test at the door. There are no required beliefs. There is never pressure to “subscribe” in any sense. Although this project is rooted in the Unitarian Christian tradition, there’s no requirement that anyone affirm Unitarianism or that anyone deny the creeds, statements, or affirmations they currently hold dear. This is a place for anyone who is curious, no matter the faith or background.
As the preacher Gavin Byrne recently put it,
We are not a church that says, “This is the truth of it.” Rather, the search for truth is our sacrament.
There is no creed or confession required, and this is what marks us out among Christian denominations.
We respect the spectrum of beliefs that are represented in our congregation.
I hope the same spirit resonates here.
More reflections, resources, and discussions are coming soon. For now, you’re invited to browse and to know that you are deeply welcome, just as you are. You’re also invited, if you wish, to subscribe to The Non-Subscriber!
