Start Here - A Guide
Welcome to The Non-Subscriber
This is a space for the spiritually curious, the faithfully unorthodox, and those who have found themselves on the margins of Christian tradition, or outside it altogether.
This guide is here to help you understand what this space is, who it’s for, and how to engage with it.
What This Is (And Isn’t)
The Non-Subscriber is a ministry of reflection, invitation, and spiritual openness rooted in, but not confined to, the Unitarian Christian tradition.
It is not a church, though it may nourish those who have been estranged from one.
It is not a place for theological debate or correction, though deep questions and open minds are always welcome.
It is not a platform for proving who is “in” or “out”, or for labeling others as impostors, heretics, “Non-Christians,” or enemies of the faith.
There are more than enough places online for argument and gatekeeping. This is not one of them.
This space exists as a kind of spiritual oasis: a response to harsh gatekeeping, dogmatic rigidity, and the subtle (or even explicit) violence of being told that you must “subscribe” to be included. This is The Non-Subscriber.
Who This Is For
We hope this space feels like home if you are:
Disillusioned with the institutional church, but not ready to give up on Jesus
A spiritual seeker who likes Jesus’ teachings, but not his traditional baggage
A person who is considering incorporating some of Jesus’ messages into your own personal philosophy or spiritual practice
Someone harmed by the dogma, exclusion, and spiritual coercion or hegemony
A Christian who doesn’t look, act, think, or vote the way you’ve been told a “real Christian” is supposed to
Someone who believes true love can never be harsh or “tough”
Curious about Christianity that makes space, not demands
Looking for something transforming, instead of performing or conforming
You absolutely do not have to agree with everything here. You don’t have to be Unitarian. You don’t even have to be Christian. You don’t need to “subscribe” to anything. If you’re seeking, wondering, quietly holding a threat of faith that still feels worth exploring, we’d love to have you!
What to Expect
Posts may take a variety of forms, possibly including:
Short reflections on scripture and faith
Devotional meditations rooted in love and mystery
Essays exploring Unitarian and Non-Subscribing theology, church history, or biblical interpretation
Reclaimed meanings for baggage words like “Gospel,” “salvation,” or “church”
Mini-sermons, gentle challenges, honest questions, and constant welcome
I endeavor to keep the tone gentle, inclusive, exploratory, and non-dogmatic. Some posts may be personal, and others may offer broader reflection. New posts will appear as inspiration allows.
What “Non-Subscribing” Might Mean
The name The Non-Subscriber is a nod to both newsletter culture and non-creedal faith.
To be Non-Subscribing here means:
You are not expected to affirm any creed, confession, doctrine, or statement of faith in order to be fully welcome and to fully belong
You are free to question teachings that are often treated as inflexibly mandatory and non-negotiable, such as:
The trinity
Young-earth creation
The literal or inerrant nature of scripture
The virgin birth
The bodily resurrection
Eternal punishment
Exclusivity, or the belief that only “subscribers” are “saved”
We ask that you respect various understandings on these issues
This is not a space where those questions must be resolved. It’s been thousands of years and people are still arguing about them. Instead, it’s a space where the questions may be openly asked and considered with honesty, safety, inclusivity, and reverence.
Core Phrases that Shape This Space
Christianity without Creed
Because faith should not require subscribing to fixed formulas or theological tests
Gospel without Gatekeeping
Because Good News is no longer good when it comes with exclusion clauses
Belonging without Boundaries
Because true love is never earned, and God does not draw lines where humans do
How to Engage
You are welcome to engage in whatever way feels meaningful and nourishing:
Read quietly, without subscribing. This is an open website
Subscribe to receive reflections to your email inbox
Share posts with others whom you feel may need them
Reply to emails privately if you wish, as respectful dialogue is always welcome
Public commenting will be disabled for the time being. This is not to discourage discussion or avoid questions, but to guard this space against trolling, performative debate, unloving attacks, and spiritual harm. If a healthy, small discussion community emerges in the future (which would be wonderful), it may take shape on its own and elsewhere. But for now, a quiet space is intentional.
You may also follow or share on social platforms when they launch (coming soon).
What is Planned for Later?
Over time, this space may grow to include:
A FAQ page addressing common theological and practical questions
A library of resources for personal study or spiritual exploration
Occasional guest reflections or curated links
A possible community space (still under discernment)
We’ll see where this takes us!
Thanks for being here!
Whether you stay for one post or many, whether you subscribe to The Non-Subscriber or simply wander through, this space was made with you in mind.
You are welcome, just as you are.
